FOCUS: The Epic Hero
We will be dedicating the first half of Quarter 3 to studying The Odyssey. Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
Much of the graded work for this unit will be worked on in class. However, you will be responsible for completing some assignments at home. The following is a preliminary list of graded assignments:
The following school-wide rubrics will be used:
- Identify and evaluate characteristics of an epic
- Identify and analyze characteristics of an epic hero and archetypes
- Identify and analyze epic similes, epithets, and allusions
- Identify and analyze plot, setting, and theme in an epic
- Apply strategies for reading epic poetry
- Summarize the plot of an epic poem
- Identify and analyze point-of-view
Much of the graded work for this unit will be worked on in class. However, you will be responsible for completing some assignments at home. The following is a preliminary list of graded assignments:
- Short Story with a New Point of View (200 points)
- Gods and Goddesses Pre- and Post-Test (25 points each)
- Journal entries/notes (50 points)
- In-class assignments (25 points each)
- Homework assignments (25 points each)

- Writing
- Presentation
- Responsible Behavior (responsibility grade)
